Here’s one
$90,000 of wages, single
On $90,000, filing single: Social Security is 6.2% of the whole amount, Medicare is 1.45% of it, and the extra Medicare tax is zero because you’re under $200,000.
How it works
Social Security, plus Medicare, plus the extra Medicare tax if you’ve crossed the line. Your employer matches the first two. They don’t match the extra 0.9%.
Where this comes from
The wage base and the employee rates are in Publication 15 and Topic 751. The extra 0.9% uses the filing-status thresholds in Topic 560. An employer starts withholding that extra at $200,000 no matter how you file. This page uses the threshold for the tax you owe.
Good for
You want the payroll-tax bite on a 2026 wage, without the income tax mixed in.
