Here’s one
Single, $220,000 of Medicare wages
Filing single with $220,000 of wages: 1.45% applies to all of it. The extra 0.9% applies only to the $20,000 above $200,000.
How it works
1.45% of every dollar. Then 0.9% of what’s above $200,000 if you file single or head of household, $250,000 if you file jointly, or $125,000 if you file separately.
Where this comes from
Medicare is 1.45% on all wages, then another 0.9% above the threshold for how you file. There is no Medicare wage cap. Your employer usually starts withholding the extra once wages pass $200,000, even if your filing status would put the line somewhere else.
Good for
You want the Medicare lines on their own, without Social Security mixed in.
