Here’s one

Single filer, $80,000 gross, 2026

A single filer with $80,000 of gross income gets the $16,100 standard deduction, so $63,900 is taxed. The result is the federal income tax on that. It isn’t a refund, and it isn’t a bill from the IRS.

How it works

Gross minus the 2026 standard deduction, and never below zero. Then each slice of what’s left is taxed at its own rate, not one rate on the whole thing.

Where this comes from

The 2026 standard deduction and the ordinary brackets are in the IRS inflation adjustments. We subtract only that deduction. Credits and itemizing are left out.

Good for

A rough federal number when you’ll take the standard deduction and you’re ignoring credits.
